Inappropriate prescribing of benzodiazepines to older persons is a concern around the globe. The module outlines the appropriate use and adverse effects of benzodiazepines. It describes alternate interventions to prescribing benzodiazepines to the older person who cannot sleep in the acute care setting.

Upon completion of this program, learners will be able to: Identify the appropriate and safe prescribing of benzodiazepines in the older person in the acute care environment. Outline the role and responsibilities in providing care to the older person when benzodiazepines are requested. Implement alternative strategies to reduce benzodiazepine use in acute care settings.


This module is designed for Junior medical, nursing staff and pharmacists responsible for the care and treatment of patients over 65, and may qualify for up to 0.5 hrs of Continuous Professional Development.
