Newborn Advanced Life Support: Practical Session - Insertion of emergency umbilical vein catheter (UVC)

Description

Welcome to the practical session Newborn Advanced Life Support: Practical Session - Insertion of laryngeal mask airway (LMA).

This session will include: revision of related newborn anatomy and physiology; risk factors; and umbilical vein catheter insertion technique. The focus of this session is to acquire the skills of emergency UVC insertion and practice administration of medications through the UVC. Theoretical knowledge gained form the NALS eLearning modules will be applied during the session.

A certificate is issued on completion.

Objectives

On successful completion of this face-to-face session, the learner should be able to:

  1. Correctly prepare for insertion of an emergency umbilical vein catheter (UVC).
  2. Demonstrate insertion of emergency UVC.
  3. Identify correct dosage of fluids, medications and O negative packed red blood cells.

Audience

This practical session is designed for clinical staff whose scope of practice is to perform newborn advanced life support interventions during resuscitation and may qualify for up to 1.0 hours of Continuous Professional Development.
