Professional Development Mental Health Scholarship - OPEN NOW

APPLICATIONS OPEN

The NSW Health Mental Health Branch is excited to partner with the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) Mental Health Portfolio to offer fully funded mental health scholarships. This scholarship will support workforce capabilities of NSW Health employees working in Mental Health or related services.

This scholarship is explicitly to support professional development students who are interested in study in the Applied Mental Health Studies (AMHS) professional development course.

The scholarship will enable students to complete single units for professional development purposes. Please note that completing stackable credit requirements through assessment within each unit will empower students to carry completed units into an award in the future, should they so choose. There is also an option to complete the unit for professional development only, but this option does not recognise the study for stackable credit.

AMHS units are offered completely online over a five-week teaching period. They are designed with flexibility to meet the needs of the health workforce who are combining study with work and other commitments.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

NSW Health professionals (nurses, peer workers and allied health staff) providing mental health services to mental health consumers will be eligible to apply for this scholarship. Students must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident;
  2. Be employed by NSW Health; and
  3. Work in mental health (nursing, peer workers, allied health staff) or related health services, or people working with vulnerable populations. Priority will be given to NSW Health staff who are working in mental health contexts.

To receive this scholarship, you cannot currently be a recipient of any other scholarship with HETI Higher Education or the Nursing and Midwifery Office.

WHAT DOES THE SCHOLARSHIP COVER?
The Professional Development Mental Health Scholarship will fund the entire unit fee of unit enrolment. Students can request up to three units with any single application, noting that the awarded funds need to be used within six months.

KEY DATES

  • Students can apply for this scholarship at any point in the academic year and will be notified of the outcome of their application usually within two weeks of its submission.
  • For information on the starting dates and duration of the six teaching periods see the Academic Calendar.
  • Students must allocate scholarship funds to units by the unit census date of each teaching period. See the Academic Calendar for census dates. Contact support@heti.edu.au for help with allocating the scholarship funds.

NOTE: this scholarship will close once the available funds have been exhausted.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP

If you are a continuing student with HETI Higher Education, you will need to apply for a scholarship via the Scholarship Tab within myHETIconnect, following the process outlined below.

If you are commencing study with HETI Higher Education, you will need to apply and be accepted for study with HETI through our online admission form via myHETIconnect. Select the Professional Development course PROD01, ensuring that supporting document required as part of the admission process (details of your workplace and role) are supplied. Then:

    1. Detail your role within NSW Health.
    2. Agree that you can meet the time commitment for completing your study load. Units of study within the postgraduate Applied Mental Health Studies course are equivalent to 50 hours of study per unit, over 5 weeks (10 hours per week). Students can choose their study commitment by managing their enrolment across the teaching periods. There are six teaching periods per year.
    3. Agree that you will actively engage with unit learning activities and recommended study support options such as resources to develop academic skills, library support, referencing guides and other resources.

HOW DO APPLICANTS KNOW IF THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL?
All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application via myHETIconnect or email, usually within two weeks of application submission.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF A SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT?
Scholarship recipients are required to:

  1. Self-allocate their scholarship funding to units via the Scholarship Tab in myHETIconnect before the Census Date of each Teaching Period.
  2. Actively engage with learning activities and support resources; and complete the unit assessment/s to at least a pass grade for stackable credit, or the alternate for professional development completion (Certificate of Completion).

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Students who fail to successfully complete a unit due to non-attendance or not achieving a pass grade (stackable credit) or completion (professional development) will not be funded to redo the unit.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SCHOLARSHIP IF I LEAVE NSW HEALTH?
If you fail to undertake studies, cease study without completing the course, or cease employment with NSW Health during study, then remaining scholarships monies will be forfeited. If you move from one Local Health District/Specialty Health Network to another, this does not constitute leaving the NSW Health System, and therefore scholarship monies remain with you.
