New Graduate Nursing and Midwifery Rural Support Incentive

The New Graduate Nursing and Midwifery Rural Support Incentive provides a one-off payment to support relocation costs for non-local graduate registered nurses and midwives seeking employment in rural LHD locations.

About the scholarship

The New Graduate Nursing and Midwifery Rural Support Incentive is available to new graduate nurses and midwives relocating to take up employment in identified rural or remote Local Health District (LHD) locations.

The applicant can apply for a support incentive of $1,000 and use the funds to support their relocation to take up employment in an identified rural Local Health District area.

Scholarship priorities

These Travel Incentives are limited and competitive. The following priorities will be used to determine the successful scholarship recipients:

  1. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People relocating to take up employment in any of the identified rural LHD locations. The person must be:
    • Of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
    • Identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and
    • Be recognised and accepted by the Aboriginal community in which they live or work.
  2. Be a new graduate nurse or midwife relocating to one of the identified LHD locations to take up employment
  3. Higher Modified Monash Model Scale of Rurality location: MM3 (low) – MM7 (high). Find Modified Monash Model (MMM) classifications on the Health Workforce Locator.
  4. Employed in a rural area of workforce need.
  5. Agreed outcome from review panel assessment of application.
  6. Demonstrate intention to remain in the rural NSW Health workforce.

Who is eligible?

The New Graduate Nursing and Midwifery Rural Support Incentive applicants must:

  1. Be a new graduate nurse or midwife who has applied for a graduate position for 2024
  2. Be a new graduate nurse/midwife relocating to commence employment in one of the identified LHD locations
  3. Be a new graduate nurse/midwife re-locating, if already residing in a rural area, from one rural area to another and taking up employment *
  4. Be able to provide evidence of appointment to a role in one of the identified rural LHD locations
  5. Be able to provide evidence of their current residential address and their relocation residential address
  6. Not have received an alternative relocation incentive payment from NSW Health to support this relocation
  7. Successful recipients must not have accepted a NSW Health scholarship or subsidy within the last two years.

* PLEASE NOTE: New graduate registered nurses and midwives who already reside in one of the specified rural LHD locations and are employed in their local District are not eligible for this incentive.
