Training Support Unit for AMIHS and BSF Program Workers
Training Support Unit for AMIHS and BSF Program Workers
The Training Support Unit (TSU) delivers education and training to workers employed in Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Services (AMIHS) and Building Strong Foundations for Aboriginal Children, Families, and Communities (BSF) services, and those working in collaboration with each of these programs.
AMIHS/BSF programs are operated and delivered with Aboriginal cultural philosophy and are aligned to the Closing the Gap initiative and the NSW Health Aboriginal Health Plan and guided by NSW Health First 2000 Days Framework policy directive.
The TSU provides high-quality education and training, equipping AMIHS and BSF program workers with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver sustainable, culturally responsive maternity and child health care to Aboriginal families and communities. This is achieved through diverse professional development opportunities, for example, the Jumbunna Webcast Series and the ‘Strengthening Foundations’ Professional Development Program.
The Professional Development Program (PDP) known as 'Strengthening Foundations' offers a culturally inclusive overview of Aboriginal Maternal and Child and Family Health topics for workers in AMIHS and BSF programs. The PDP consists of:
- One Strengthening Foundations workshop
- Four eLearning modules
The program includes culturally responsive health care education within a primary health care framework, tailored to the needs of Aboriginal families and communities that:
- delivers education, training and support tailored to diverse learning and communication styles, using a range of methods including face-to-face, group workshops, online learning e.g. modules, webcasts.
- facilitates the development of supportive, responsive, and professional networks.
- promotes the AMIHS and BSF programs, emphasising the importance of equitable working relationships between clinical specialists and Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners.
The TSU is funded to provide education and training for workers in AMIHS and BSF programs.
