Information for students

The information contained on this page is for current and prospective students.

Student handbook

The Student Handbook provides further information for current and prospective students. Specific details about each program, are provided in the Program Guide provided by each NSW Health RTO delivery site.

Policies, procedures, documents and forms

Students should be familiar with the NSW Health RTO policies and procedures. Documents and forms may also be found on the same page.

Course requirements

Applications for most programs is via an expression of interest. Enrolments are subject to funding, resourcing and delivery site priorities.

All NSW Health RTO programs require students to meet minimum English language levels before enrolment, which are assessed through the language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) system. If additional support is required, NSW Health RTO will work with the student to plan a program of support prior to enrolling them into the program.

Some courses have specific requirements such as computer skills, pre-requisite training, access to specific workplace activities and resources, and a significant time commitment to complete learning and assessment activities. For some courses, interviews are conducted to discuss course requirements, time and self-study commitments. Manager support and approval is usually required for NSW Health employees.

For the programs delivered to NSW Health employees, the amount of training provided maybe less than that offered elsewhere to individuals with no vocational experience. Students however should still attend all scheduled training sessions and any workplace learning arrangements.

Enrolment

All students are required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an individual education number and is used to record all VET training undertaken in Australia. Students will not be issued with a Certificate or Statement of Attainment (SOA) without providing their USI to the RTO. The USI may be used for the notification of the enrolment process and reporting training activity data to the Department. For more information on how to apply for a USI, please visit the 'Get a USI' on the USI website. Please conact your program coordinator if you require any further assistance.

Enrolment requirements and student consent

All RTOs are required by law to collect Student AVETMISS (Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard) data and submit it to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). Upon enrolment, students must complete an AVETMISS requirements form and provide their consent for the RTO to disclose their details to the NCVER.

Students enrolled in Smart and Skilled Programs will also be required to consent to the RTO providing their details to other organisations as required by law. The RTO is required to disclose student information to the Department of Education for the purpose of obtaining a Commitment ID for Smart and Skilled funding.

All Education Providers, including RTOs by law, are also required to provide student personal information including the USI, to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). Students enrolled in the Diploma of Nursing, will be required to provide their consent for their details to be provided to Ahpra.

Consumer protection and privacy

In collecting your personal information, the NSW Health RTO will comply with the requirements set out in the Privacy Act 1988, the Privacy Amendment Act (2012) and the NSW Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. For more information about student privacy, please visit Student Handbook and the privacy information on the NSW Health website.

Learning in the workplace

NSW Health RTO recognises that valuable learning occurs in the workplace. The RTO's courses are designed to assist students to improve their work performance, and provide them with opportunities to progress along their chosen career pathway. Training and assessment activities reflect the knowledge and skills used in the workplace. Generally, students will undertake face-to-face, online and workplace learning.

Trainers and assessors

The RTO's trainers and assessors are fully qualified; they have expertise in their field and current industry experience.

Course progression and completion

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning

Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning (RPL) mean students can avoid duplication of training and finish their training earlier. Credit transfer may be granted for any unit(s) of competency that have been previously attained from the NSW Health RTO or another RTO. RPL provides an opportunity for students to gain recognition towards a unit of competency. RPL is an assessment process that allows students to show evidence of what they already know, can do or have done.

Deferral or discontinuation or training

Deferral will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and will only be granted where a student has shown that they have, until their request for deferral, fully committed to the program. Deferral will not be granted for students who have participated in training and/or attended class but have not handed in any assessments. NSW Health RTO cannot guarantee that a student's course will still be available at their delivery site when the student is ready to return to their studies. Students must return to study by the deferral end date. Failure to do so will result in automatic withdrawal from the program.

Program completion and issuance of Qualification or Statement of Attainment

On completion of a full Training Package Qualification (e.g. Diploma of Nursing, Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety) or an Accredited Qualification, students will be issued a Qualification Certificate (Testamur) and a Record of Results showing the units of competency achieved in the program. On successful completion of Accredited Courses, Skill Sets, Skills Clusters and one or more single Units of Competency, students will be issued a Statement of Attainment that lists the individual UOCs achieved.
