Facilitator Development Resources
As a facilitator, you already have health coaching expertise and educational experience. The following resources may strengthen your educational capabilities to deliver health coaching education to optimise health coaching capacity for NSW health staff.
Reflective Practice
You may strengthen capabilities of learners and enhance learner insight and self-reflection through providing supervised reflective practice sessions.
A structured approach to reflective practice and methods for facilitators to run reflective practice sessions can be found in the Clinical Excellence Commission's Reflective Practice Workbook.
Skills Based Activities
Health coaching capability development and maintenance requires ongoing practice and reflection. Local Health District (LHD) and Specialty Health Network (SHN) facilitators can lead workshops and simulation sessions to develop and strengthen health coaching skills.
The NSW Health Coaching Education and Training Framework may be used by facilitators to guide content for creation of skills-based activities.
Applying health coaching theory to practice can be strengthened through simulated scenarios. Simulated scenarios should be facilitated by an experienced health coach with education expertise. Triads are an effective method for participants to practice using health coaching skills and models. This approach involves role playing with three participants assigned the following roles:
- Consumer/Coachee - selects a meaningful, personal goal to work on during the session. This goal can be health or work related.
- Coach/health provider - uses a structured approach (e.g. the GROW model: Goal, Reality, Options, Will and enabling questions to empower the consumer/coachee in identifying actionable steps.
- Observer - watches the interaction, focusing on how questions and responses evolve. The Observer provides constructive feedback from their perspective at the end of the scenario.
Facilitators can support triad activities using simple resources such as a GROW model guide for the participant practicing the coach role and a reflective feedback sheet for the observer.
The example scenario session template may be used to practice health coaching capabilities. Facilitators are encouraged to adapt the scenario to their local context and patient population.
