About Zero Suicides in Care Training for NSW

Zero Suicides in Care (ZSIC) is part of the NSW Government’s Towards Zero Suicides (TZS) suite of initiatives that aims to reduce the number of people who die by suicide in NSW.

Under ZSiC co-ordinated action across Local Health Districts, the Agency for Clinical Innovation, the Clinical Excellence Commission and the NSW Health Education and Training Institute (HETI) is being taken to:

  • Support continuous change management and quality improvement to reduce suicides and suicide attempts of people accessing care in NSW
  • Promote strong service leadership that enhances safety and embeds a just and restorative culture
  • Change NSW Health policies and models of care, and support staff in the mental health system to enhance their suicide prevention skills

HETI is developing a range of suicide prevention education and training modules for the NSW Health workforce within mental health services, community health and hospital settings. These are consistent with the NSW Policy Directive Clinical care of people who may be suicidal and the NSW Health suicide care pathway. Training offers a flexible approach where staff can choose the level of learning required to consolidate and build on existing capabilities. Resources in development support eLearning, workshops and work integrated learning. All training aims to support a holistic clinical approach where people experiencing mental health issues, as well as their families, become active participants in their own care and recovery.
