Graduate Diploma of Essential Surgical Skills
This program has been designed to provide participants with the opportunities to develop and enhance the skills and knowledge that they require to become safe, contributing members of the operating theatre team. This program draws on requirements of the nine Royal Australasian College of Surgeons surgical competencies:
- Management and Leadership
- Teacher and Scholar
- Health Advocacy
- Medical Expertise
- Technical Expertise
- Clinical Decision Making
Graduates from the program will have advanced theoretical and technical knowledge in principles of operative surgery, surgical instrumentation and indications for specific use, concepts of risk management and operating theatre governance, impacts of legal and ethical standards on surgical practice and the issues of health advocacy for surgeons.
The course will cover off a number of areas of competency, including:
- Operative skills
- Operating theatre safety and function
- Legal and ethical principles surrounding operative surgery
- Providing specialised surgical teaching and supervision
- Undertaking professional reflection
The program has been accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority as a Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8). The course is planned to be delivered under the auspices of the NSW Health Registered Training Organisation (RTO) following successful scope application.
