Why St George Hospital?
St George Hospital is a busy principle teaching hospital of The University of New South Wales and a Level 1 Trauma Centre for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD). It has recently completed a major redevelopment with the addition of a new Acute Services Building housing a new purpose-built Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, operating theatres, inpatient beds, cardiac cath labs and a rooftop helipad. Despite being a major tertiary hospital, St George maintains a friendly ‘small-hospital’ feel in terms of interdepartmental relationships and communication.
Since opening in October 2014, the new Emergency Department has seen a steady rise to over 80000 annual presentations making it one of the busiest in the state. It is equipped with 5 resus bays, 30 acute monitored beds, a 10-bed Short Stay Unit, in-house CT and X-ray facilities (with 24-hour reporting) and a dedicated Paediatric unit. The department is well-supported by a comprehensive range of surgical and medical subspecialties along with Trauma, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatric and Community services. Together we serve a diverse demographic contributing to a highly varied and interesting casemix.
As a department, we are committed to providing a supportive work and training environment for our registrars, encouraging enjoyment of the job and pursuit of clinical excellence. Our cohesive team of medical, nursing, allied health and ancillary staff work hard to foster positive relationships within the department and with the hospital community at large. We have full accreditation with ACEM for 2 years of Emergency Medicine training and accredited supervisors for the Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma. Our dedicated consultant team provides 16-hour on-site cover, 7 days a week.
St George trainees have an outstanding track record in both the Primary and Fellowship examinations. Our current training program includes :
- 4 hours weekly paid protected teaching
- structured Fellowship and Primary preparation with access to ACEM examiners
- regular and opportunistic ‘pop sim’ sessions
- in-house Ultrasound Training days with CCPU-accredited FACEMs
- comprehensive online ECG accreditation module
This program continues to evolve with input from our trainees. Those employed in unaccredited positions have access to the Hospital Skills Program comprising a wide range of critical care workshops and courses often fully or partially funded by the hospital. All trainees receive a $1000 education fund with study leave days as per the award.
Paediatric cases comprise about 25% of patient with a significant number of high acuity presentations. We are fortunate to have several dedicated Paediatric FACEMs to oversee a structured “Paediatric-intensive” term in the ED and who are also heavily involved in organising regular paeds-focussed teaching days and sim sessions.
We have a well-established research program in place with an appointed FACEM Director of Research assisting our trainees in producing high quality research for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication. There are active weekly written and registrar-presented journal clubs.
The ED registrar position offers rotations in ICU, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, Medicine including Palliative Care, Trauma and other Emergency Departments within the Network. Rotations are also available to Coffs Harbour, Sydney and Westmead Children’s Hospitals and 6 months Toxicology at Prince of Wales Hospital. There are also opportunities for other rural/regional rotations. We are currently establishing an Ultrasound Training term supervised by a CCPU-accredited FACEM.
St George is located in the suburb of Kogarah which is only 14km south of the Sydney CBD. It is easily accessible via bus, train and major roads.
