Why Gosford Emergency Department?

Gosford Hospital is a regional ED Trauma Centre and teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. It provides all specialties except cardiothoracic and neurosurgical cover.

The hospital's mixed emergency department is one of the busiest in the state and sees over 65,000 presentations per year.

The department is accredited for 2 years advanced training with ACEM with terms also being available in ICU, anaesthetics and paediatrics. Gosford Hospital also has close ties with the Retrieval Service and Westmead Children’s Hospital for secondments to them.

Gosford is now officially recognised in a training network with Wyong Hospital following a recent ACEM accreditation review and trainees can undertake an additional 18 months of advanced training time in Wyong.  Therefore, trainees can undertake essentially all of their training time within Central Coast Local Health District.

Gosford has an excellent record with both the part 1 and part 2 fellowship exams. A number of staff are or have been senior examiners for the college. It is a friendly department to work in with “big city” medicine but without the “big city” attitude. We find that many trainees settle down on the coast when they complete their training.

Registrars have four and a half hours of paid, protected teaching time per week along with excellent on the floor supervision and dedicated part 1 & 2 preparation courses and one paid for course or conference per year.
