The Hospital Skills Program (HSP)
The HSP provides continuing professional development for 'non-specialist' doctors (SRMOs, CMOs, Hospitalists and others) working in NSW Health. The program uses a variety of traditional and non-traditional resources and methods appropriate to the working environment of the participant, resulting in the acquisition of skills useful to an employer, and appropriate to the local patient community.
Masters of Clinical Medicine
NSW Health is calling for career medical officers (CMOs), hospitalists and other generalists to apply for the 2014 intake of the University of Newcastle’s Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management). The program is one of the first of its kind and is designed to equip non-specialist doctors for broader roles in clinical leadership and in co-ordinating patient care in hospitals. HETI is providing sponsorship for doctors attending this course.

HSP professional development process pilot
The HSP professional development process aims to engage non-specialist doctors in a cycle of continuous improvement in skills, knowledge and behaviour enabling the doctor to safely fulfil their current medical role as well as their aspirations for career advancement.
The professional development process ensures the development of a formal relationship between the doctor and their supervisor to guide learning and maximise opportunities for mentoring. A range of workplace based assessment tools recommended to facilitate constructive and timely feedback on performance.
The HSP is developing the professional development process (PDP) in cooperation with our partners at pilot sites:
- Sutherland Hospital Emergency Department
- Children's Health Network - Westmead and Sydney Hospitals
- Canterbury Hospital
- Blacktown Hospital
- Mental Health Service - Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD
