Welcome to the eLearning module Cognitive Disability and the Criminal Justice System.
The purpose of this module is to better equip health staff to communicate effectively and support people with cognitive disability in or at risk of contact with the criminal justice system. Primarily this relates to Intellectual Disability (ID); Acquired Brain Injury (ABI); Drug and alcohol related brain damage and Autism spectrum disorder.
People with cognitive impairments might lack awareness or ability to look after their health and wellbeing. Set service criteria often makes this group of people ineligible for services and at times aspects of their behaviour contributes to their exclusion from services. This can contribute to their initial and ongoing contact with the criminal justice system.
A certificate is issued on completion.


After completing this module you will be able to:

  • Recognise and respond to clients who have cognitive impairment
  • Use appropriate communication to meet client needs
  • Support clients who may come into contact with the criminal justice system 
  • Identify a suitable range of mainstream and disability service pathways


This module is intended for frontline staff who work with clients who are in, or are at risk of contact with the Criminal Justice System and may qualify for up to 0.5 of Continuous Professional Development
